Arthritis

What is Arthritis?

While arthritis is very common, it is a medical condition often misunderstood. Arthritis is not a single disease. Rather, it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. More than 50 million people have some type of arthritis.

Causes of Arthritis

Arthritis is the result of the breakdown of cartilage tissue in a joint. An infection or injury can quicken the natural breakdown. An autoimmune disorder can also cause a form of arthritis known as rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis is pain or disease in the joint. Common symptoms include swelling, pain and decreased range in motion of the joint. Symptoms may be absent and suddenly present. They may be mild or severe.
